DEVELOP RITUALS AND ROUTINES
You can also build emotional safety by creating rituals that help you feel more settled or organized. Think for a minute about your daily routines. How do you organize yourself for the day? Do you always start by getting a cup of coffee or making the rounds and greeting your friends? When you get home, do you typically sit down and read the mail for a few minutes?
Rituals make you feel safe because you do the same things each time rather than constantly having to face or think up something new. Look at the patterns you already have in place. If your daily rituals always include food, you may have to create some new routines to conquer your emotional eating.
As a newspaper journalist, Jamie was under constant pressure to research and complete her news stories before press deadlines. To wind down after a hectic day, she usually snacked on chips and candy bars on the way home from work. When she joined a new weight-loss program, Jamie decided to change her afternoon rituals.
Now I stop at the park every day to appreciate the trees, talk to the squirrels, and mentally relax from my work. I sit on a bench and write in my journal, then lay out my plans for the evening. By slowing down and soothing my emotional soul, I’m able to handle the demands of my family without feeling like I have to eat something before I can face them.—Jamie
If you tend to use food to nurture yourself, start creating new rituals you can follow instead of eating. You might want to develop ones for different times of day or aspects of your life. For example, plan one routine for after work and another for times when you spend an evening by yourself. Here are a few ideas.
• Listen to a particular song or type of music such as a favorite classical piece.
